History

In 1991 Dr. Jake Sinclair, a San Francisco Pediatrician and his wife Lee, a writer and activist came to Kenya and Uganda because Time Magazine announced there were 6 million AIDS orphans!

As they began to work there, they noticed an very high rate of sexual violence
amongst these vulnerable youth.
In the first stage they tried to replicate their American "Youth Industry" non-profit
by assisting street children in Nairobi and Kampala.
They started by pairing street orphans with relatives still living in Nairobi and outlying areas.
But unfortunately their first impulse, to they start feeding programs and build schools,
ulitmately perpetuated the most tenacious obstacle to health and well being: Dependency.

And did not address the high rates of violence these children were enduring.
They found that personal empowerment led to the most transformative changes.
Empowerment Transformation Training (ETT) was developed in response.
